Dragonfruit Love

Life on a chopping board

I’m biting my tongue to
stop me from saying
things I might regret
so hard I can taste

the coppery taste of blood
and brine and the sea
breeze in the back of
my mouth.

I’m biting my tongue to
feel the pain I miss
to let myself be taken by the
serene love, I’ve never known.

My thorns soften and break
like scales of a dragonfruit
oozing pink blood.
My whole life on a chopping board.

You could hurt me but
I trust you that you won’t.
