How to Find More Happy Moments by Letting Go of Your Expectations

And without ignoring your needs

As 2021 is here, everyone has high hopes. That it will be better. That life will get back to normal. That we can finally leave everything of 2020 behind and have a year we deserve.

Hope is necessary and being optimistic about new opportunities is a great way to invite motivation. But we shouldn’t forget that life rarely happens according to our expectations. It’s not life’s fault, the problem is with our expectations. Life is just life. In 2021 too.

In order to be happy with what we already have, there is one simple but not too easy thing to do: letting go of our expectations.

Expectations are those little illusions that we build up inside ourselves that show us how our life supposed to look if it was perfect — they are based on reality and our values but they can take up forms that are too far from the probabilities that we will encounter.

Life is far from perfect and perfection, as it is, doesn’t exist. Letting go of expectations is not about forgetting who we are, what we want, what we need or what our values are. It is simply about not assigning too much importance to the external factors that are outside our circle of influence, but rather making peace with whatever the…
