One aspect of toxic positivity is the flood of motivational quotes and Instagram posts that are repeating over and over how you deserve everything, how you deserve to be treated right, and how you deserve more.

The intent behind is pure — I believe, but the being deserving and worthy topic is much bigger than reducing it to a few empty words that will eventually backfire.

Imagine that you are in a relationship that doesn’t work. You have tried everything, you have done everything you possibly could — but it just doesn’t work. And you start to wonder whether you deserve better. Then comes a bunch of inspirational Instagram gurus telling you at every turn that you deserve to be treated right, you deserve a partner who is [insert a long list of positive attributes here ] and that you deserve someone you don’t need to teach how to treat you, how to love you, how to show you they care.

You already felt terrible, but now you not only know that you don’t get what you would need, but also that you shouldn’t be okay with not getting what you need.
