I am kind of ashamed to admit that it took me 30 years to figure out what works for me when it comes to weight loss and weight maintenance. It took me at least a hundred trials and errors — mild success and massive frustration alternating, ruining my body image, slowing down my metabolism and leaving me with a conflicted relationship with food.

I started my first diet when I was 11–12. I was chubby but not particularly fat. It was the early nineties and even without the excessive presence of media, the lack of Instagram celebrities and distorted expectations towards female bodies, I found out how beauty bias favoured my better looking, skinny classmates. I was a slightly weird kid, more interested in words than make-up, reading poetry instead of teenage drama novels, finding it difficult to find people of the same age to appreciate my interests. I was convinced it was about how I looked and I desperately wanted to change it.

I quit eating bread, pasta, rice and chocolate. I cut portion sizes to almost non-existent. I tried to eat only fruit for a whole week as one of the girls in my class had claimed she lost 15 lbs by that method. Dieting was a slippery slope and I…
